~A Day at Hawthorne~

The Hawthorne Valley is so full, so dynamic; so many things go on here every day, and I am only just beginning to see the complexity and human investment that is Hawthorne.

Just to give a small sense, there is the Hawthorne Valley Association, the Hawthorne Valley School, the Hawthorne Valley Farm, the Hawthorne Valley Farm Store, and the Hawthorne Valley Farm Visiting Students Program...and I'm sure I left something out ;)

So I want to offer a few pictures from different areas of the Valley, giving some sense of the daily dynamic here.

Our sow Bubblegum gives birth

Several were still-born, a few were crushed during the two-hour birth...only 3 survived. Mother nature can be both sweet and sharp.

Taking care of our woods

Prepping and packing sauerkraut with Seth

Katie lights the cob-oven for bread baking

Some inside shots of the Dairy

The processing floor

The copper milk vat

The newfangled yogurt do-hicky

Filling yogurt

So much yogurt...

Where does all this milk come from?

The herd

Milking equipment

Farmer Lisa hand milking an injured utter

With a warm heart...
